Grade 3 Math Tutor
Third grade math is seminal in providing students with essential building blocks and basic mathematical concepts. It’s on these building blocks that the higher grades depend which is why it is so essential that students not only develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts, but also develop a positive attitude towards math. Providing in-home personalized math tutoring in the safe and comfortable environment of your home will help to promote healthy attitudes and essential math building blocks.
Our one-on-one tutors work with the local curriculum. In the third grade, students must master not only important mathematical concepts, but also the following academic skills:
- Problem solving.
- Reasoning skills including pattern recognition, classification and the investigation of conjectures through discussion.
- Reflecting and monitoring their thinking i.e. by explaining to others why they think their solution is correct.
- Ability to use a variety of concrete, visual, and electronic learning tools and appropriate computational strategies to solve problems.
- To relate mathematical ideas and procedures to everyday contexts.
- Make basic representations of simple mathematical ideas.
- Communicate mathematical concepts orally, visually, and in writing.

Number Sense and Numeration
- Count from 1-1000 and write numbers in the correct order and represent money to $10
- Read and write numbers up to one hundred
- Round two-digit numbers to the nearest 10
- Count in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, and 100’s to 1000 from various starting points, and in 25’s to 1000
- Count backwards in 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s and count backwards by 100’s from 1000
- Addition and subtraction of two and three-digit numbers
- Multiplication and division of one and two-digit numbers; multiply to 7 x 7 and divide: 49 ÷ 7
Measurement
- Estimate, measure, and record length, perimeter, area, mass, capacity, time, and temperature
- Compare, describe, and order objects, using attributes measured in standard units
- Draw objects using a ruler with given measurements
- Use a ruler to measure the perimeter of objects
- Use a thermometer to measure temperature and understand concepts of freezing, cold, cool, warm, hot, and boiling temperatures as they relate to water and air
- Measure the mass of objects and the capacity of containers
- Solve problems involving the relationships between minutes and hours, hours and days, days and weeks, and months and years
Geometry and Spatial Sense
- Compare and sort two-dimensional objects
- Identify right angles and describe angles as less than, greater than or equal to a right angle
- Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons prisms and pyramids and sort them by number of sides, internal angles and right angles
- Describe movement from one place to another using a map
Patterning and Algebra
- Identify and extend a repeating pattern involving two attributes (e.g. size, color, orientation, number)
- Creating a number pattern with addition or subtraction on a number line using a simple rule
- Understand the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction
- Understand the properties of zero and one in multiplication
- Determine, the missing number in equations involving addition and subtraction of one and two-digit numbers
Data Management and Probability
- Collect, read and organize data graphs, including vertical and horizontal bar graphs and label the axes
- Interpret and draw conclusions from data presented in charts, tables, and graphs
- Demonstrate an understanding of mode
- Predict and investigate the frequency of a specific outcome in a simple probability experiment and demonstrate an understating of fairness in a game based on outcomes
- Sort and categorize a group of objects using two attributes simultaneously e.g. sort buttons by size and number of holes
