Grade 1 Math Tutor
The first grade is essential in creating a strong foundation for future success. With one-on-one tutoring in the comfort of your home, your child will not only be able to grasp the most fundamentally important concepts, they will also form a positive attitude towards math.
We work with the local curriculum which not only imparts mathematical concepts, but also requires your child to learn the following academic skills:
- Problem solving.
- Reasoning skills including pattern recognition, classification and the investigation of conjectures through discussion.
- Reflecting and monitoring their thinking i.e. by explaining to others why they think their solution is correct.
- Ability to use a variety of concrete, visual, and electronic learning tools and appropriate computational strategies to solve problems.
- To relate mathematical ideas and procedures to everyday contexts.
- Make basic representations of simple mathematical ideas.
- Communicate mathematical concepts orally, visually, and in writing.

Numbers
- Count from 1-50 and write numbers in the correct order
- Counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s
- Understand the concepts of “greater than” and “less than”
- Write the names of numbers up to 10
- Relate numbers to the anchors of 5 and 10
- Compose and decompose numbers
- Count backwards from twenty in 1s, 2s and 5s
Addition and Subtraction
- Understand addition and subtraction using objects and pictures
- Subtract or add two, one-digit numbers without the aid of objects or pictures
- Add a two-digit number to a one- or two-digit number without regrouping
- Subtract a one- and two-digit number from a two-digit number without regrouping
- Add three or more one-digit numbers
- Identify fact families with sums from zero to 18
Measurement
- Measure height and length, area, mass, capacity, time, and temperature
- Compare, describe, and order objects, using attributes measured in non-standard units
Fractions
- Understand and identify halves, thirds and fourths
Patterning and Algebra
- Identify, describe, extend, and create repeating patterns
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of equality
Geometry
- Identify solid two-dimensional shapes such as square, rectangle, circle, etc.
- Identify three-dimensional figures such as cube, cylinder, cone, rectangular prism and sphere, etc.
- Describe the relative locations of objects using positional language
Data Management and Probability
- Create and understand simple picture graphs, bar graphs and tables
- Collect data and create graphs and pictographs with labels on the horizontal axis
- Describe the likelihood that everyday events will happen (probably, maybe, definitely, etc.)
Time and Money
- Identify the value of coins and a dollar bill
- Be able to calculate the value of a number of different coins
- Combine and identify equivalent values of coins up to $1.00
- Add and subtract money amounts to 10¢
- Identify and use a calendar by ordering periods of time using weeks and months of the year
- Be able to tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the hour and half-hour
